Atmospheric October-dusk photograph of a foggy rural Ohio hollow at the edge of a small town park, narrow gravel path winding between bare-branched maple and oak trees with a few golden leaves still clinging, low amber ground fog drifting across the trail, a single wooden Bigfoot cutout sign leaning crooked against an oak tree like it was left behind, deep blue pre-twilight sky with a thin orange horizon line, no human figures, moody cinematic heartland feel, dark amber and slate blue palette โ€” Carrollton, Ohio site of the second annual Carroll County Squatch Fest & Parapalooza, October 17, 2026

Bigfoot Bandits Hit Carroll County: Inside the Heartland's October Squatch Festival Corridor

Someone โ€” and they will almost certainly never be caught โ€” walked through Carrollton, Ohio last week and took every handmade Bigfoot cutout sign they could carry. The signs were advertising the second annual Carroll County Squatch Fest & Parapalooza, scheduled for Saturday, October 17 at St. John's Villa. They'd been cut out, painted, and staked into the ground by a small group of residents at a non-profit that supports adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Coast to Coast AM picked it up October 8. Your Ohio News ran it September 30. And it surfaced the same week that Crawfordsville, Indiana announced the third annual Crawfordsville Paranormal Convention for October 24-25. October 2026 has more Sasquatch festivals inside the heartland than any month on record.

What Happened in Carrollton

The signs were handmade. St. John's Villa Co-Director of Marketing and Communications Kim Lewis and a handful of volunteers cut, painted, and staked each one โ€” Bigfoot silhouettes on plywood, around four feet tall, designed to face the road and announce the second annual event. Then sometime during the week of September 22-26, someone walked past most of them and walked away with several.

Lewis told Your Ohio News her group went public after the thefts because they wanted the signs back, and because the labor behind them was real:

"These signs are handmade, and take a great deal of time, effort, and care to create."

Coast to Coast AM ran the piece Wednesday morning, October 8. The headline โ€” "Bigfoot Bandits Steal Several Sasquatch Signs in Ohio" โ€” went out to the show's overnight audience. It's the kind of quirky-cute heartland story that plays well on a syndicated radio show. It's also a useful reminder that the festival circuit in the Ohio Valley has grown dense enough in 2026 that even the side-stories are getting national pickup.

Why Carrollton, and Why Now

The banditry aside, the festival has a serious local motivation behind it. Lewis told Your Ohio News that Carroll County was chosen because of its proximity to a long-running string of local Sasquatch reports โ€” including Don Keating's 1990s white Bigfoot video, which Keating is reportedly going to discuss during the festival's speaker track. Carroll County already carries six BFRO reports, with the most recent logged in mid-2025.

And Carroll County lives in the long shadow of the Minerva Monster โ€” the 1970s-era Ohio Bigfoot-flavor reports out of the Mineral City / Waynesburg area, just southeast along the Tuscarawas River watershed. The Minerva Monster cases never carried a confirmed photograph, but the cultural memory of them is what made northeast Ohio the region for Sasquatch talk before this year's flap.

That history is what Lewis is banking on when she says the festival is supposed to grow from 500 attendees in 2025 to 1,000 this year:

"People may not talk about their experiences with bigfoot or the paranormal, but they want to hear about what other people have experienced."
โ€” Kim Lewis, St. John's Villa, in Your Ohio News, Sept 30 2026

And the festival's on-site programming is built around exactly that. The quarter-mile walking trail โ€” themed Bigfoot this year โ€” is going to be the loudest part of the day. Lewis warned attendees directly that "there will be screaming, whooping and calls coming from the trail." The Bigfoot Calling Contest is back, with adult and kids' divisions. Don Keating will be there with the white Bigfoot story.

October 2026: A Festival Every Weekend

Pull back from Carrollton and the rest of the picture snaps into focus. October 2026 isn't a single Sasquatch event in the heartland. It's a corridor.

This weekend โ€” October 17, Saturday: the second annual Carroll County Squatch Fest & Parapalooza at St. John's Villa, 701 Crest St. NW, Carrollton, Ohio. Noon to 5 PM. Free admission, donations for parking.

Next weekend โ€” October 24-25: the third annual Crawfordsville Paranormal Convention at the Montgomery County 4-H Fairgrounds, 400 Parke Ave, Crawfordsville, Indiana. 10 AM to 7 PM Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM Sunday. This is the event that just announced itself this past week, branded as a Paranormal + Bigfoot Research gathering tied to the area's Men in Black / Crawfordsville Monster folklore.

All month: the Hocking Hills Bigfoot Festival has its tent-pole weekend. The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway's Bigfoot Spotting Express trains have been running all fall as a permanent tie-in to the Nelsonville Bigfoot Festival that opened October 2. The Brown County (Indiana) fall calendar still has Saturday-night Bigfoot tours running out of the new Indiana Bigfoot Research Center in Nashville. BFRO has its annual 2026 expedition roundup running through October in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Missouri โ€” including a September 17-20 Ohio expedition that drew amateur investigators into the same woods as the active Woodbury Wildlife Area cluster.

This weekend in town near you: the monthly Anderson County Bigfoot Hunt returns to Lawrenceburg, Kentucky on October 17, 8 PM to midnight, run by paranormal researcher Jeff Waldridge of KYGhostTours. Ticketed ticketholders head into a top-secret Anderson County location for four hours of listening, wood-knocking back, and looking for any movement in the tree line.

From Crawfordsville on the western edge, to Brown County in the south, to Lawrenceburg and Owensboro and Olive Hill in Kentucky, to Loudonville and the Hocking Hills and Nelsonville and now Carrollton in Ohio โ€” five separate Bigfoot events inside one month, all in the heartland. That's not regional. That's a circuit.

Why This Matters Now

Three things.

First, the circuit is being driven by a real underlying event. The 2026 Ohio Flap is what put the heartland on the Sasquatch map this year โ€” the March cluster in Portage and Trumbull counties, the May Daylight Class B's in Jefferson County, the August 16 Woodbury sighting by Shane Spencer, the late-August Nelsonville sighting, the August 23 Hodgenville encounter by Clayton Sims that just aired on WFMD and is climbing the Coast to Coast AM mention count again this week.

Second, the festivals are pulling the public-facing portion of the research into the open. This time last year, every BFRO Class B was sitting in a private database. Now the same incidents are festival headliners, social media clusters, ride-along trains, and โ€” yes โ€” guest slots on Coast to Coast AM.

Third, the banditry is a small but real signal. When a town reaches the point where handmade Bigfoot signs go up on every corner ahead of a Sasquatch festival, the Sasquatch has officially graduated from niche local folklore to community economic infrastructure. Somebody stole those signs because they were worth stealing โ€” because they meant something locally, because they were advertising something people were going to.

What to Watch This Month

Three things that matter as the corridor keeps rolling.

1. New reports from each festival's local area. When Brown County (Ind.) hosted its third annual Indiana Bigfoot Conference the weekend of September 25-26, the surrounding state park saw a measurable uptick in field reports. The first Larue County, KY sighting ever recorded came within a week of the Hodgenville encounter being publicly discussed. Expect the same pattern at Carrollton and Crawfordsville โ€” at least one fresh Bigfoot sighting per festival weekend within a 30-mile radius is the working baseline right now.

2. The Don Keating white Bigfoot video. Keating reportedly captured footage he believed to be a white Bigfoot in Carroll County in the 1990s. He's a returning speaker for the Carroll County Squatch Fest. If the video is shown publicly for the first time this weekend, it will reset the national conversation about color variants of Sasquatch โ€” and the Ohio heartland's claim on the white Bigfoot tradition.

3. The banditry follow-up. The signs have been gone a week and a half. If they were a prank, they usually come back. If they don't, the Squatch Fest & Parapalooza is going to spend its second year with a plank of plywood where each sign used to be โ€” which is its own kind of folk-art installation about how the Bigfoot in the heartland is now valuable enough to steal.
